Join us for a creative afternoon dedicated to observing and illustrating birds, guided by science illustrator Pedro Fernandes. Originally from Lisbon, now based in Zagreb, Pedro brings together a love for nature, scientific curiosity, and artistic approach. With a background in geology from the University of Lisbon and a postgraduate program in science illustration at the University of California – Santa Cruz, he works as a freelance illustrator and field ornithologist – and is excited to share his knowledge with you!
With the holidays coming up, a hand-painted bird illustration could make a truly thoughtful gift – you’ll have the chance to create a unique, personal little artwork for someone you care about. No prior experience is needed – just your curiosity and a willingness to try.
There will be two parts of the workshop:
1. Getting to know bird morphology
We’ll begin by exploring the basic shapes, proportions, and morphological features of birds. You’ll learn simple techniques that help you observe and make a sketch of the animal you observe.
2. Creating your own bird illustration
In the second part, you will develop your bird sketch into a small watercolour illustration. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable way to express your own style with the help of a professional artist.
