The mosaic Mediterranean landscape was shaped over thousands of years through the presence of people and their livestock in the karst region. It represents a blend of cultural heritage and areas of exceptional biological diversity that is increasingly threatened by the decline of traditional agriculture and livestock grazing, resulting in the gradual overgrowth of grasslands and agricultural land.
This unique natural and cultural heritage is at the heart of the five-year project “Mosaic of LIFE,” launched by the Association Biom together with project partners. Over the next five years, Mosaic of LIFE will carry out restoration activities on at least 560 hectares of grasslands and improve management on an additional 1,020 hectares. Habitat restoration will include mechanical removal of woody vegetation, controlled burning under expert supervision, and, most importantly, promoting traditional grazing practices. It is precisely the livestock that grazed these areas for centuries that created and maintained this distinctive landscape.
The first public presentation of the Mosaic of LIFE project will take place at the Krka Eco Campus in Puljane on Tuesday, 28 October 2025, starting at 10:00.
The introductory part of the event will include welcoming remarks from the organisers and partners, followed by a detailed presentation of the project with a focus on planned activities and expected results. The central part of the event will feature a panel discussion with project partners, where participants will be able to share experiences and discuss opportunities for collaboration and practical application of project results. The event will conclude with refreshments and informal networking at the Krka Eco Campus.
The event is intended for representatives of the local community, institutions, farmers, scientists, and all those interested in nature conservation and sustainable development.

The Mosaic of LIFE project has a total value of €4,850,315.57 and is co-funded by the EU LIFE Programme, the Office for NGOs of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund. The project is implemented by the Biom Association (project coordinator), the “Krka” Knin Ecological Association, the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture, the Krka National Park Public Institution, and the Firefighting Association of Split-Dalmatia County. Associated partners include the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition – Institute for Environmental and Nature Protection, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Public Institution More i krš, and the Public Institution Priroda of Šibenik-Knin County.
