Project summary

The Neretva Delta is a key resting, wintering and nesting ground for birds on the Adriatic Flyway. At the same time, a large number of bird species in the area are threatened by poaching. Namely, this area is one of the most critical in Southeast Europe due to the frequency of illegal bird killing.

The Biom association has been continuously implementing the Adriatic Flyway project since 2013, financed by the EuroNatur and MAVA foundations. The main goal of the project is to protect the Neretva Delta as a key resting, wintering and nesting ground for birds on the Adriatic Flyway. Through this project, Biom monitors the state of bird populations on the Neretva, organizes educational lectures and workshops for the local population, participates in the development of a management plan for the area with the Public Institution “Priroda dubrovačko-neretvanska”, and also monitors the impact of illegal bird hunting. Through cooperation with key stakeholders and the local population, it strives to preserve the diverse bird world, as well as combat threats to them.

Biom’s successes through the Adriatic Flyway 4 (AF4) project:

Organization of 8 camps against poaching

Establishing a regular practice of removing illegal poaching objects from the Prud and Pod Gredom reserves

Establishment of 3 new reserves in the area of the Neretva Delta and changing the boundaries of the “Ušće Neretva” reserve

Development of the community of bird watchers in the area of the Neretva delta through the “BirdID Neretva” program

Implementation of a socioeconomic analysis of the perception and motivation of illegal killing of birds in the Neretva Delta
