We invite you to the Open Day of the Učka Ornithological Camp 2025 on 27 August 2025, where all interested visitors will have the opportunity, accompanied by experts, to get to know the bird species and other wildlife inhabiting the area, learn more about the region’s biodiversity, see how bird ringing is carried out, and understand why it is important.
Since 2006, Association Biom has been conducting bird ringing at the Rovozna pond within Učka Nature Park during the autumn bird migration. In autumn, birds migrate to areas where they can find sufficient food during the winter, often following the coastline. Učka, as a coastal mountain range with its forests, meadows, and pond, offers them an important resting spot. For this reason, Association Biom, in cooperation with the Učka Nature Park Public Institution, organises the annual ornithological camp at Rovozna pond, in the protected area of Učka Nature Park, on the eastern slopes of Učka above Mošćenička Draga and Sv. Jelena.
The mission of this camp is to study bird migration, assess the importance of local habitats for resting during migration, and determine the local composition of bird species. Licensed bird ringers set up ornithological nets around the pond, take measurements of captured birds, determine their species, sex, and age, attach rings, and then release them.
