Following several years of successful cooperation in organising expert workshops for judicial officials on wildlife poaching and poisoning, on 3 June 2026, in Zagreb, the Biom Association and the Judicial Academy signed a Cooperation Agreement on Environmental Law.
Through this agreement, the Judicial Academy and Biom confirmed their intention to continue their cooperation in the areas of education, professional development and capacity building for judicial officials and advisors regarding the implementation of environmental law, particularly in the areas of criminal, misdemeanour and administrative protection of the environment and nature, as well as the application of national legislation and relevant European Union legislation and international conventions.
“Long-term, high-quality cooperation between civil society organisations and the Judicial Academy is very important to us. Our cooperation so far has shown that the exchange of knowledge between nature conservation experts and judicial officials is essential for understanding complex nature conservation issues and finding solutions to them. We hope that through this cooperation we will continue to organise workshops and prepare joint publications that will contribute to effective legal protection of the environment and nature, while also finding other ways to jointly contribute to the further development and understanding of environmental law,” said Željka Leljak Gracin, Executive Director of the Biom Association.
This year, the Judicial Academy and the Biom Association will organise three workshops in Zagreb, Osijek and Split on the successful prosecution of the illegal killing, capture and trafficking of wild species. Over the past two years, as many as seven workshops have been held, with a total of 87 participants. “All of this is really just the beginning of what we are sure will be a very fruitful cooperation aimed at better protecting the environment and nature,” concluded Željka Leljak Gracin.
