Association Biom is announcing a photography contest on the theme Biodiversity in Focus.
Are you passionate about nature and photography, either professionally or in your free time? Regardless of your experience or age, we invite you to explore the richness of the living world around us through your lens and apply to exhibit your photographs.
The theme encompasses everything that makes biodiversity invaluable: from hidden details in nature and fascinating scenes of Croatia’s wilderness, to moments that inspire reflection on the challenges of nature conservation and the protection of natural heritage. Whether it’s majestic landscapes, barely noticeable organisms, or everyday moments in the lives of wild species, we want to see how you perceive biodiversity. Every shot can be a reminder of what we have and what we need to preserve.
The exhibition of selected photographs will take place on May 30 at Močvara in Zagreb, as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Association Biom. The ten best submitted photographs to be exhibited will be selected by our expert jury:
- Krunoslav Rac – wildlife photographer, author, writer, and a great admirer of Velebit, who has dedicated his professional career to photography and the mountains. He is the president of the Lupus Ecological Association and author of several books, including Velebit – The Experience of a Mountain, Land of the Wolf and the Wind, Gacka – Man and River, and Following the Bear, with a new book Bura – The Wind of Velebit coming soon.
- Goran Šafarek – Croatian biologist, writer, researcher, and award-winning nature photographer and filmmaker. He has participated in numerous projects related to habitat restoration, sustainable development, and nature conservation through films and books.
- Dragan Matić – long-time contributor to the Cropix photo agency and photo editor for 15 years.
- Dries Engelen – Head of the Bird Conservation Program at Association Biom, holds Masters in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology.
The jury will also select the best photograph among the ten exhibited, which will be announced during the celebration. The author of the best photograph will receive a prize package including:
- the handbook Birds of Croatia and Europe
- Biom badges
- the magazine Pogled u divljinu
- a field trip with Biom ornithologists during 2026
The contest is open from April 20 to May 10, 2026, until 23:59. Selected authors will be contacted no later than May 15. All printing and exhibition setup costs will be covered by Association Biom, and printed copies will remain the property of Biom after the exhibition.
The Biodiversity in Focus exhibition is part of a full-day birthday program that includes workshops, a presentation of the magazine Pogled u divljinu, and an evening gathering and party open to everyone.
