Record number of bird watchers in Maksimir

  • 05.03.2024.

The birdwatching that we held last Saturday, March 2 in Maksimir Park in Zagreb broke the record for the number of bird watchers!

Nice weather and obviously increased interest of citizens in getting to know the bird life attracted as many as 65 participants of our guided bird watching tour to Maksimir. Among those gathered were pupils from Novo Čiče Elementary School and students from Zagreb VII. gymnasium.

Due to the large number of interested participants, we divided the observers into two groups with two guides, so that every nature lover could follow the guide’s instructions, armed with the “Birds of Croatia and Europe” handbook, our edition of the iconic Collins handbook, which is considered the best guide for bird identification in Europe.

Both teams recorded total of 29 species, which is a good number considering that in this period of the year the birds are just returning from the south. Observers noticed starlings, which are one of the first migratory birds that return from the south in spring. Also, during bird watching, all three types of woodpeckers – black, gray-headed and green – were recorded, which at this time of the year are widely drumming on the trees, as this is how they mark their territory on the eve of nesting. We were also pleased with the presence of nuthatches, which appeared at a distance of only a few meters from the group of observers.

The next birdwatching event will be organized on April 6 at Bundek. We are expecting you!
