Encourage the local community to preserve urban biodiversity through cooperation with local organizations.
Propose specific construction measures for the conservation of swifts, thereby ensuring suitable cavities for their nesting during the construction and renovation of various buildings.
Continue monitoring the swift populations in Dubrovnik, using innovative solutions to present the results.
Project summary
The project represents a continuation of activities focused on the conservation of swifts in the urban areas of the City of Dubrovnik. In addition to the already established project partnership between the BIOM Association and the Dubrovnik Natural History Museum, the Community of Technical Culture of the City of Dubrovnik has now also joined the project. The project activities include educating the general public and specific target groups about the issue of swifts disappearing from the urban parts of Dubrovnik, both from historical buildings and more recent constructions. In addition, one of the key outcomes of the project will be the creation of a brochure with illustrated solutions for swift conservation on buildings, as well as designs for establishing new colonies—offering, for the first time, concrete proposals tailored to various target groups. An effective tool for swift conservation will also be a map showing the locations of existing nesting colonies in the City of Dubrovnik, which is the result of years of monitoring swift populations in the area. Target groups include institutions responsible for cultural heritage, property owners and managers of buildings with existing swift colonies, as well as those whose buildings have the potential to support new colonies through specific interventions (such as schools, private buildings, or residential properties). Schools have been identified as particularly important locations for establishing new colonies. For this reason, the Community of Technical Culture of the City of Dubrovnik will organize educational workshops on 3D modeling at three different primary schools in the area. The results of the project will be presented at a public event, and all materials developed as part of the project will be distributed to the relevant target groups.
Materials and publications

The implementation of the project is co-financed by the City of Dubrovnik through a public call for the (co)financing of projects in the fields of environmental and nature protection, as well as urbanism and spatial planning, that are of interest to the City of Dubrovnik for the year 2025.
