Project goals
Collecting data on lead shot pollution of sludge in Neretva Delta reserves and carp fishponds
Advocating for a ban on the use and carrying of lead shot in the European Union
Project summary
The use of lead shot in aquatic ecosystems introduces a large amount of this toxic heavy metal into nature, which poses a danger to birds, but also to people who consume game meat or farmed fish. For this reason, the use of lead shot in wetlands is prohibited by law in Croatia, but this ban is largely not enforced.
As part of this project, we are trying to collect evidence on the use of lead shot in carp ponds and in the Neretva delta area and advocate for better law enforcement and more effective monitoring of the use of lead shot in wetlands.
Achievements:
- Evidence was collected on lead shot contamination of sludge in the special ornithological reserve “Prud”
- On February 15, 2021, the European Commission, through the REACH Regulation, banned the use and carrying of lead shot in wetlands and within 100 meters of them.
