Ornithology Camp Ucka 2013

  • 28.05.2013.

NGO BIOM is proud to announce Rovozna Ornithology Camp 2013 in cooperation with Public Institution Nature Park Ucka. We are ringing birds for the ninth year using same, constant methodology. Except bird ringing, this year we will take care of some old fruit trees (all the time) and do some dry stonewall works (weekends only). You are expected to help with birds, other activities are not obligatory. Additionally, if you join us, you have freedom to leave whenever you want or to go elsewhere (Croatia is beautiful) and come back.

Site: Nature Park Ucka, Istria, Croatia
Camp location: 45°12′ N, 14°13′ E, Google Earth kmz file
Dates: 17thth August – 6th October 2012
Nearest village: Sveta Jelena, Moscenicka draga

The parking place is 400 m from the camp. Accommodation is in a big military tent and in additional personal tents (if needed). Living conditions are also “military style” – there is no tap water or any kind of shower (fresh water is brought in containers and we expect a sustainable use of it), the forest nearby is used as a “toilet” (we will provide a shovel) and there are solar panels for notebooks, mobile phones and cameras. We cook on a camp fire or on a big gas stove. The participants are asked to participate in the food budget with 40 kn daily (5,3 EUR; 4,5 GBP).

Number of mist-nets: 14, each 12 m long and 3 m high; 168 m length in total
We don’t use any lures like feeders or tape lures. Mist-nets are in use from early down until 11:00 a.m. and from 16:00 until late dusk. We open mist nets before daylight, and in the evening they are in use until full dark. During the day break it is possible to go on the beach (40 minutes by car) and/or in the market or to take hiking tours.

Number of birds caught per day: 30-100 (rarely up to 200)
