Common tern breeding colony, educational board
This week we set up an educational board about common terns near a gravely island in the Sava-Odra channel (Lučko). The island is one of the biggest breeding grounds for the species in Croatia. In December we organized a volunteer action with the purpose of restoring the island, which was covered with young willows and poplars, due to succession.
The educational board focuses on the biology and ecology of the common tern. However, it also contains some rules of behaviour near the colony. You can see how to poster looks like here.
Before the arrival of terns we also plan to put more gravel and heighten the island so it does not get submerged during high water levels, in cooperation with Hrvatske vode d.d.. We also plan to put several wooden rods, on which the terns can sit so we can read the code on their rings easier.
Once again, a big thank you to everyone who helped with this project!
