Project summary

Ponds are important nesting, feeding and resting areas during bird migration. Unfortunately, they are also recognized as areas where bird poaching is common.

The project “Full of Carp” had the aspect of researching the illegal killing of birds on ponds as a poaching black spot in Croatia, and policy advocacy aspect – advocating for better policies and law enforcement. During the project implementation, the frequency of poaching using prohibited tools (prohibited baits, semi-automatic rifles, poaching in a protected area) was discovered in four carp ponds near Zagreb. During the project implementation, Biom also addressed the irresponsible business of Decathlon, which was selling decoys for hunting waterfowl that were prohibited by the then Hunting Act at this time. Biom also participated in public consultations for the adoption of a new Hunting Act. During the consultations, we pointed out the grey area that hunting on fishponds is prohibited, but still allowed under conditions that are not fully checked for compliance.
