Project goals

Expand and improve public and community knowledge on illegal killing of birds in the target region, in order to identify and promote targeted strategic actions within and beyond the scope of this project. Increase awareness and stimulate public demand to stop illegal killing of birds.

Support increased international and national advocacy efforts to ensure political commitment and technical capacity to enforce actions to end illegal killing of birds.

Maintain and strengthen the networks of civil society organisations and stakeholder groups working together to address illegal killing of birds.

Design and implement pilot projects with key stakeholders in priority countries to demonstrate, share and promote effective approaches to reduce illegal killing and taking of birds.

Project summary

The project’s long-term goal is to prevent and combat bird poaching in priority nations, with a focus on effective law enforcement in important sites, capacity building for law enforcement and regulatory institutions, and legislative improvement and harmonisation. To ensure law enforcement and effective laws, we collaborate directly with governments, law enforcement agencies, and courts through training and cooperative action, offering technical assistance, information, and resources. We enable the adoption and implementation of strategic national action plans in collaboration with important stakeholders at both the national and international levels, and we form strategic alliances with relevant international players.

  • Biom’s successes during the LIFE ABC project:
    • Postponement of the hunting season for Common quail to 21st August
    • Development of a pilot project of a national volunteer network for civil monitoring and tackling of bird crime,
    • Removal of 7 poaching hides from the Donja Dubrava reservoir
    • Organization of an intersectoral workshop in cooperation with the secretariat of the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) on the preparation of strategic national action plans to combat illegal killing of birds
