Project summary

“Preserving Wet Meadows for Birds and Plants at Lake Vrana 2” is a continuation of the “Preserving Wet Meadows for Birds and Plants at Lake Vrana” project, which began in 2018. It focuses on maintaining the results achieved in the previous project and implementing the activities outlined in the Wet Meadow Management Plan.

The main activity of the project continuation is the regular implementation of late-season mowing, which prevents the meadow from overgrowing with reeds and woody vegetation, while allowing target plant species such as Chouardia litardierei and Allium telmatum to spread. Late mowing promotes natural seed dispersal, preserving biodiversity without disturbing migratory birds during spring and autumn migrations.

As part of the project, the volunteer program developed in the previous period continues. Volunteer activities are primarily aimed at the local community and schools, with the goal of educating about the value of wetland habitats and involving participants in specific conservation activities. In addition to habitat restoration, the project also aims to reduce disturbance to birds. The local road along the edge of the wet meadow represents a source of sound and visual stress for the birds, reducing the quality of feeding habitats and increasing the risk of bird fatalities. To mitigate this issue, the project plans to plant vegetation along the road to create a green barrier. This natural protection will separate the meadow from the road, creating a sense of safety for the birds.

The project also contributes to the long-term sustainable management of wet grasslands by fostering collaboration between the Lake Vrana Nature Park and local livestock farmers. Extensive livestock farming, as a traditional land-use practice, is a key ally in preserving grassland habitats. The project’s goal is to engage the local community and support the revitalization of grazing as an effective model for conserving natural values.
